Technology & Sleep

There was a time, not that long ago, that bringing work home meant packing important papers into a briefcase that might or might not get read later that evening. Other than that, we tended to gather round the radio or TV, read the newspaper, a magazine or a book and enjoy time with our families. Rarely were we ever interrupted with a phone call from the office or a co-worker. Whatever it was could wait till tomorrow.

Today, our work follows us almost everywhere we go, including where we go. Between laptop computers, tablets and smartphones, we can be and often are called on to work almost every waking moment. Even in those hours we are not working, we use technology for our own purposes, whether it is navigating our way home in traffic, seeing what our friends are up to, checking on the news, or yes, checking our work emails. Technology has many downsides however, one of them being sleep. How many of us have had trouble going to sleep because the last thing we do before going to bed is read email, say goodnight to our Facebook friends, or check out a cool pin on Pinterest? How many of us even have big flat screen TV’s in our bedroom we fall asleep to?

The blue light emited by all these devices have a negative effect on our eyes and our sleep paterns. The folks at bigbrandbeds in England have put together this infographic showing us how technology is hurting our sleep patterns and what we can do to cope, without throwing our smartphones out the window.

You’re The Product

Know all those FREE apps and services we all love? Why do you suppose they are free? What’s to be gained by pouring thousands of hours into developing a product only to give it away. Well, it turns out, there is no free lunch. While the product you downloaded and use for free might seem innocuous enough, in actually, the product is YOU! These companies have to pay salaries and themselves somehow for their hard work, so instead of selling a product, they are selling you (and me). We are not saying that is always a bad thing by any measure. Google runs a wonderful search engine and makes billions placing ads for the things you are searching for next to every search. That’s a good thing. On the other hand, sometimes companies get a little too personal and deliver ads for things you might not want everyone knowing you searched for, or deliver ads for websites and products you already use, wasting their money doing so. The folks at Bizbrain have put together this infographic on how companies sell our information to make money for themselves.

Technically Speaking

“Language is a virus from outer space’ said William S Burroughs. Performance artist  Laurie Anderson brought this saying to a wider audience with her 1986 song Language is a Virus. Language is always evolving. We certainly don’t speak the same English as did Chaucer or Shakespeare. We don’t even use words in the same way as we did a decade ago. This about it. When we say “tablet”, “piracy”, “spam, “thread”, and a host of other words, what pictures form in your mind? Probably not the same pictures that did when you were a child. Even the terms we use in the industry such as “contact”, “glass”, and “progressive” have evolved over our lifetime…no? Here is an infographic from the folks at Lebara that take a look at how the digital online world has changed our language.

How Teens Are Changing Social Networking

Teenagers have almost always been early adopters of most technologies. Let’s face it, they are not as stuck in their ways as those of us who have teenagers of our own. So, savvy business people look at what teens are doing to help predict what the rest of us will soon be doing and to position their companies for what those teens will be stuck in their ways of doing as they grow older. How teens are using social media is the subject of today’s infographic, courtesy of the folks at PhoneSheriff.

Selling Social

Not all social media sites are equal. Certain sites will work better for one business over another and other sites will shine just as brightly for other businesses. Which one works for you of course depends on what your business is selling and to whom. It’s always best to try a variety of social media sites and discover which sites work best for your particular business. This infographic from Top Web Design Schools shares a lot of good research into which networks work best at what. What do you think of their conclusions?
